Torchiere lighting originates from the ancient hand held burning torch raised above the head for illumination. Later improvements used an urn or metal stand containing an oil reservoir at the top which was set afire to light up an area. Torchiere style lighting has survived for many years and today remains one of the most efficient methods for lighting a large area.
