Porcelain lamp body and handles are hand decorated with authentic gold gilding (real gold). Gold is hand applied in thin layers. Gilding or "gilt" using authentic gold is more resplendent and luxurious than any other medium. There is no substance that yields the singular rich color of genuine gold.
