The terms "wicker lamp shade" and "rattan lamp shade" refers to the general style of lampshade made from botanical plants called "rattan" which encompass over 600 species of palm plants native to tropical Africa, Asia and Australasia. Most rattan plants are vine-like bamboo except rattan stems are solid and need structural support. Some are more like typical palms with stouter erect trunks growing to hundreds of meters long. Wicker furniture dates to ancient Egypt. Extensive use began during the Iron Age, through the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1900's until today. 70% of the world's rattan is in Indonesia: Borneo, Sulawesi and the Sumbawa islands. Some comes from the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Bangladesh.
